Welcome to MPS Homeschool Services

In accordance with state law, Minneapolis Public Schools is required to ensure that all school-age children between the ages of 7 and 17 who live within the district's boundaries are being educated.

To comply with the Minnesota Compulsory Instruction Law, instruction must be provided in at least the following subjects:

1. Basic communication skills including Reading and Writing, Literature, and Fine Arts;
2. Mathematics and Science;
3. Social Studies including History, Geography, Civics, and Government; and
4. Health and Physical Education.

From the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE):

"Homeschool parents do everything that traditional private school administrators and teachers do but in the context of their home.  This means planning what students learn, keeping all records, managing costs and assuring the quality and scope of their student's education for college recruiters and employers.  Students graduate from homeschools with homeschool diplomas and homeschool transcripts, just as they would from other private schools."

New homeschoolers can enroll at any time during the school year; however, to be eligible for the district aid, the Full Report (new enrollment for the year), or complete the Initial Report to the Superintendent online or the Letter of intent to Continue to Provide Instruction (returning students), or complete the Letter of Intent to Continue Instruction online,  needs to include both the Pupil Immunization Statement and testing information along with MDE's Student Report for Aids to Nonpublic Students.  These forms must be received in our offices by October 1st.

For a complete enrollment packet, please go to SY 2020-21 Enrollment Forms.  To request an enrollment packet be emailed to you, please email MPS.Homeschool@mpls.k12.mn.us.

(State Law requires that each home educator must register every year with the district).
